UPDATE: Local Rabies Outbreak Continues

According to a recent article in National Geographic News, the new strain of rabies found in foxes and skunks near Flagstaff, particularly in the Mount Elden area, "appears to have mutated so that foxes and skunks are now able to pass the virus on to their kin—not just through biting and scratching but through simple socializing, as humans might spread a flu," attracting the interest of disease researchers all over the world.

The article states that "virologists haven't seen such fast adaptation to a new species in rabies before," and also raises the question, "Could Rabies Become Contagious in Humans?" According to experts, "The risk of such a virulent strain jumping to people should be a major concern... But no one is expecting the rabies strain to become a contagious, swine flu-like epidemic among humans."

REMEMBER:

  • Flagstaff and all of Coconino County remains under an animal quarantine which began in April and is expected to last at least 90 days. Pets must be kept on a leash when outdoors.
  • Rabies is almost always fatal and can be caught and carried by all warm-blooded creatures, including humans.

Happy Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10, 2009

According to the National Restaurant Association, Mother's Day is the most popular day of the year to dine out at a restaurant in the United States.

But originally that wasn't the reason, nor was it the way Mother's Day was celebrated.

Julia Ward Howe, composer of the well-known song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, was the first person to propose a Mother's Day celebration in the United States. She wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation, a long poem about the joys and pains of motherhood, in 1870. It was written as a call for peace and disarmament following the American Civil War, in which over 600,000 people had been killed.

Part of her poem goes like this:

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."
Blood does not wipe out dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace...

In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day, as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in World War I.
