National Spelling Bee Finals

Around here, we like to say: "If you can learn to write well, speak well, and spell well most people will think you're a genius." It might not always be true, but it's probably good advice most of the time.

Certainly can't hurt, right?

Check out these kids. They're the finalists in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the oldest spelling competition in the United States. This year there are two contestants from Arizona. One is Natasha L. Begay of Lukachukai. She's is a 14-year-old eighth grader at Tsaile Public School. But it looks like she got eliminated in Round 2. She missed the word criterion.

The final round of this well-known competition is on television tonight, Friday, May 30, on ABC 15 from 7:00-9:00pm. It's a lot more fun to watch than you might imagine. Seriously! We recommend it!

Think you can spell well?

7 Secrets to Improve Your Ability to Learn

The author of the website Pick Your Brain dot com, David Bohl, says he's a Life Coach. We're not exactly sure what that is. But, no matter. His advice is good.

He says, "It makes sense to acquire good learning skills sooner than later."

Duh! We definately agree with that! That's what we do around here.

He continues: "Skills such as... good [reading] comprehension are useful for all the great information you want to take in.

"Here are some more secrets for improving your ability to learn. Most apply to classes, but you can adapt them to any learning situation."

And, (drum-roll) his 7 "secret" tips to improve your ability to learn are:

1. Be Prepared.

2. Get and Stay Organized.

3. Be On Time.

4. Take Good Notes.

5. Establish Your Learning Style.

6. Ask Questions.

7. Complete All Assignments.

No surprises there!

Nevertheless, we recommend you read the rest of this helpful column online here.

Speaking of our mothers...

We've all got mothers. And, wow, there are a lot of us... more and more and more all the time!

The giant, whirring odometer of World Population is predicted to roll past 6,666,666,666 people alive on planet Earth sometime today, Friday, May 9, 2008.

And, if you think about it, no matter how you divide that number up, that means there are a lot of mothers!

But 6.7 billion people is just a drop in the ol' population bucket. There should be more than 9,000,000,000 of us wandering around by 2050!

We'll probably be looking for something to eat.

You can check the up-to-the-minute estimate of the world's ever growing population at the U.S. Census Bureau's World POPClock... which differs a bit from Princeton University's Office of Population Research Clock... which differs a bit from the France's Population Mondial Clock.

Point is: no one knows how many people there are. But we do know this: no one got in here without a mom. And most of our moms are pretty great!

So, from all your children here at Christensen, we'd like to say:
Happy Mother's Day, moms! Thanks for giving birth to us!

Feb. Site Council Meeting Minutes

Christensen School
Site Council Meeting
February 26, 2008

In attendance: Jana Fix, Marilyn Noyes, Mr. O., Cindy Walzer, Pam Lasher, Denise Koenig, Rosie Seyler, Kathy Smith

Call to order: Mr. O. called the meeting to order at 4:35 pm. Everyone looked at the minutes and approved them.

Meeting Objectives:

The Christensen Site Council will discuss:

  • Budget
  • District ELD Classrooms
  • PLC Goals
  • New Purchase Requests
  • PTIO activities

Old Business

I. Budget Information: Kathy Smith went over the budget handout. We’ve purchased 4 palm pilots for $811.01, 35 headphones for our computer lab for $249.85, Terra Nova Practice Tests for $637.67 and spent the remainder of the library book budget on Accelerated Reader Tech Support and 4 large orders of books.

II. PLC Discussion: Mr. O. said we may have to move 1 preschool to Cromer; not sure about the Flagstaff Cooperative PS.

III. ELD Classroom: Mr. O. went over the handout of possible ELD teachers. Mandated by the state. Mr. O. will have to present this to the board at a later date.

IV. Christensen Presentation: Mr. Laird, Mrs. B. Campbell, Mrs. Seyler, Mrs. Koenig and Mr. O. presented to the School Board and did a GREAT job. Mr. O. was very proud of our staff members.

V. PTIO Activities: A cake walk/game night is rescheduled for tomorrow night, 2/27, at 6 pm. Spring BINGO will be in April and will be called “SPRINGO” and we can yell “BOING” when getting a bingo.
Sammy James has offered to paint a Pirate for our school to hang at the end of the front hallway so people will see it when they first enter our building.

VI. Other Info: We raised $1500 for JumpRope for Heart. The BOC concert has been rescheduled for 3/6 at 6:00 pm.

New Business

I. New Purchase Requests:

A.New White Boards: Seven teachers did not get a new version of a computer. We are all caught up on cafeteria tables. We need a couple of white boards. Mrs. Noyes & Rosie would like a white board and so would our preschools. Teachers like the magnetic white boards. We should order at least 5 more.

B.Parent Surveys: Parent Surveys: Cindy needs to know when to do the parent surveys. 150-175 returned when they were paper/pencil. Could we possibly hand out at conferences? They won’t have them available by then. In the past, PTIO handled the “rewards” for bringing back the surveys such as ice cream, etc. to the classes with the most returned.

What did we do that benefits our children? Mrs. Koenig liked the PTIO events for the families held at night, Rosie thinks that possibly the ELD classes will be beneficial, Pam is glad that Rosie’s getting a whiteboard, Marilyn appreciates all the work that Mr. O. & Cindy Noble have done to look at the ELD staffing, Cindy liked the JumpRope for Heart program.

Next Site Council meeting: Our next meeting will be March 25th, 2008 at 4:30 pm in the Music Room. Marilyn Noyes will chair.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:21 pm.

8 really BIG undersea creatures

The oceans of the world are often called the last frontier.

Actually, there's really only one ocean, the World Ocean. All the other names we give to the one, giant, interconnected body of water that covers three-fourths of the planet's surface just refer to its smaller parts, the Seven Seas.

But, regardless of what we call it, the mostly unexplored, deep, salty water that covers much of planet Earth is filled with great beauty, compelling mysteries, and strange oddities.

None stranger than these 8 super-giant things from the deep.

REMINDER: Parental request forms due FRIDAY

Parental request forms for 2008-2009 teacher assignments are due this Friday, May 2, 2008 at 4:00.

Christensen parents are welcome to complete a Request for Classroom Assignment form if you have a preference for your child's teacher next year.

Please note: Requests are not filled on a first-come, first-served basis and, as a professional courtesy, our teachers will not recommend other teachers to you.

You do not need to fill out a Request for Classroom Assignment form if you do not have a preference, or if you're willing to trust the judgment of your child's current teacher. If you do not make a Request for Assignment your child will be placed by his/her current teacher and the Grade-Level Placement Team.
